Greg “Fossilman” Raymer
Known in the online poker world as “Fossilman,” Greg Raymer was one of the pioneers of Internet poker. Greg Raymer took on the nickname of “Fossilman” due to his choice of card protector when playing live poker. He used fossils to protect his cards and he would often sell his card protectors to other players at the table.
Greg played poker online back when poker was played in its primitive form via Internet Relay Chat rooms, which was known as IRC poker. Additionally, even before making it big by way of his World Series of Poker Main Event victory, the “Fossilman” was a regular poster on the original online poker forum, which was known as the rec.gambling.poker discussion group. Even after he became famous, he continued to contribute regularly to that online poker community.
When Greg took down the WSOP Main Event in 2004, Greg Raymer was a Patent Attorney. He has since retired from his original occupation and plays poker full time. Greg is also quite active in the political aspect of online poker, where he sits on the board of directors for the Poker Player’s Alliance, which is a group that is dedicated to protect the rights of online and live poker players. Additionally, the “Fossilman” is a member of Team PokerStars.
In addition to taking down the 2004 WSOP Main Event, Greg Raymer has several other tournament cashes under his belt. On top of the cool $5 million he earned for taking down the WSOP, Raymer has also cashed in the following WSOP Main Event, where he finished in twenty-fifth place and cashed for nearly $305K. He also finished sixth in a $1500 NL event at the 2005 WSOP, which netted him nearly $120K in tournament winnings. In 2007, “Fossilman” cashed in three different WSOP Events, with top ten finishes in the $1500 7 card stud event, as well as the $2K 7 card stud hi-lo event. He also finished in fourteenth place in the World Series of Poker’s $50K H.O.R.S.E event. In his 2007 WSOP cashes alone, he brought home over $160K in tournament winnings. He also took down the World Cup of Poker, hosted by PokerStars Download in 2007, as well as the World Championship of Online Poker $320 PL Omaha event, which was also hosted by PokerStars. In 2009, Greg Raymer finished third in the WSOP $40K NL Holdem Championship, which netted him nearly three-quarters of a million dollars for his third place finish.
